How and when he died: Sept. 29, of dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Good sportsmanship: Dean Duerst spent 37 years as a salesman and regional manager for Hormel, but he never lost the love for his brief first career as a teacher and coach. Duerst, who was inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978, played five sports as a young man. He went on to teach biology, chemistry, physics and coach for two years before he decided to switch careers to earn more money for his family. He returned to coaching many years later with the golf program at Notre Dame de Sion in Kansas City. "It didn't get to me until he talked about his Sion girls how much he gave up to support his family," his daughter Kathy Burdette said.

Duerst kept his approach to sports in his business dealings. "It was always with kindness and good sportsmanship. Try hard and get behind your team," said his wife, Mary Duerst. Golf coach: After Duerst retired from Hormel, he helped Notre Dame de Sion win two golf state championships. The girls on the team called him "the Bear" because he could growl, but he was very kind.

"Dean was just electrifying," athletic director Dennis Conaghan said. "His courtesy, his laughter, his jokes he just carried that laughter around with him all the time." Conaghan remembers his kindness, his willingness to help others, and having a big heart. He was preceded in death by his brother Henry and nephew William. Duerst as a father figure whose mark lingers at the school. Even though he retired from Sion four years ago, the school will hold a ceremony on Friday to dedicate the 2008 season to Duerst and present the golf state championship trophy to his widow. Duerst loved playing golf, too, and once won $25,000 with a hole-in-one.

Shortly after he was diagnosed with dementia, his family asked him what they should work hardest to preserve in his life. Golf, he answered. His family helped him play until last summer. 20 years of tailgating: Golf was actually Duerst's second-favorite sport, Burdette said. "He worshipped football, but he couldn't find a team to play on as an adult," Burdette said.

Duerst compensated by tailgating before Chiefs games for 20 years. At first, it was part of his duties for Hormel, but he gladly held tailgate parties people even when his company scaled back its presence at games. Duerst, whose ancestors helped found New Glarus, had split allegiances. Every year he hoped to see the Packers and the Chiefs in RICHARD LEE EVANS Richard Lee Evans, 44, of Eagleville, passed away November 14, 2008. Cremation.

Joker: Duerst's friends and family remember him as a joker, but one whose humor was always good-natured. That sense of humor was such a big part of his life that, toward the end, when he had trouble speaking intelligibly, he made a point to tell Burdette that he wasn't trying to be funny. When speaking was too difficult, he still found a way to make people smile just by the way his face would light up when they walked into his room. "He was somehow able to communicate his kindness, his looking out for others, without words," Burdette said. Survivors include: His wife, two daughters and their husbands, a son and his wife, a brother, a niece, a nephew and eight grandchildren.

Last word: Duerst was a devoted family man. He went to as many of his grandchildren's events as he could and even flew to Michigan to watch one of his granddaughters play soccer. Twice, when his daughters had children in the hospital, he went to their houses to take care of their families as best he could. That put him a little out of his depth, which showed when he put children in the wrong clothes or they ended up with soda spilling from their sippy cups. His family laughs about those moments, but they remember the real point of his volunteering to take care of the grandchildren.

"We got the thing that people most need taken care of," Burdette said. "We got enough love, enough hugs." To suggest community members to profile, send e-mail to Karen M. Mills, Gary S. Gibson, Ralph (Ben) Gibson Ill and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m.
